Rameshwaram is one of the holiest places in India and is located on a beautiful island. It is separated by a small Pamban channel from Sri Lanka. According to the Hindu mythology, this is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka.Rameshwaram is located on a beautiful island in the lower side of India. Lord Shiva too is worshipped in this place. Renowned for its magnificent prakaras with massive sculptured pillars on either side, The RameshwaramRangnathan Temple houses the longest corridor in the world. Agniteertham is famous for its sacred waters and Pilgrims perform poojas in honour of their ancestors at this seashore. The Five-faced Hanuman Temple holds the floating stone which was used to build the bridge between India and Sri Lanka.
Rameswaram temple, spread over an area of 15 acres , has lofty gopurams, massive walls and a collossal Nandi. Rameswaram also has a 4000 feet long pillared corridor with over 4000 pillars, supposedly the longest in the world. The eastern Rajagopuram towers to a height of 126 feet and it has nine levels. The Western Rajagopuram, though impressive is not as tall as the Eastern one. The image of Nandi is about 18 feet tall and 22 feet in length.It is believed that the ancient shrine was housed in a thatched hut until the 12th century and that the 1st ever masonry structure was built by ParakramaBahu of Sri Lanka.The third corridor is the most amazing architecture with a whopping 1212 pillars set on an elevated platform and has a height of close to 23 feet and is naturally said to be the longest pillared corridor in the world. Interestingly, these carved granite pillars are not available locally and are believed to have been brought in from some other part of Tamil Nadu. The carvings on these pillars are quite mind boggling and have been painted in bright colours as part of the regular maintenance and make for a compelling visual – one that will stay will you even after you leave this place.
