Luang Prabang, the ancient capital city of the Lan Xang Kingdom, located in northern Laos at the heart of a beautiful mountainous region, is famous for its historic temples. The town is built on a peninsula formed by the Mekong and the Nam Khan River and Mountain ranges (in particular the PhouThao and PhouNang mountains) encircle the city in lush greenery. In 1995 this city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Luang Prabang is exceptional for both its rich architectural and artistic heritage that reflects traditional urban architecture with that of the colonial era, remarkably well-preserved distinct cultural traditions.
