KEY WEST (FLORIDA)

30-10-2017

Key West is an island city in the Straits of Florida in the United States. The city lies at the southernmost end of longest north-south road in the United States. This island is about 6 km long and 2 km wide, Key West is only about 150 km from Cuba and a dividing line of Atlantic Ocean and  Gulf of Mexico, 260 km from Miami by road. Key West was relatively isolated until 1912, when it was connected to the Florida mainland via Overseas Railway extension. The building and other structures date from 1886 to 1912. The basic features that distinguish the local architecture include wood-frame construction of one- to two-and-a-half-story structures set on foundation piers about one meter above the ground. Exterior characteristics of the buildings are peaked metal roofs, horizontal wood siding, , pastel shades of paint, side-hinged louvered shutters, covered porches (or balconies, galleries, or verandas) along the fronts of the structures, and wood lattice screens covering the area elevated by the piers.

Hurricane “Wilma” on October 24th 2005 was the worst storm in memory forced to evacuate the entire island, business owners were forced to shut their doors. After the hurricane had passed, the storm surge sent eight feet of water inland completely inundating the large portion of the city flooding 60% of the homes. The most recent hurricane to impact Key West was Hurricane “Irma” which made landfall in Key West in the morning of September 10, 2017 only 2 months before our visit to this place.
