Chittorgarh is located on the banks of river Gambhiri, famous for its Rajput chivalry and pride, was home to Rajputs. It is believed that Chittorgarh was gifted to BappaRawal as a part of dowry when he married the Solanki princess in the 8th century. Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan is one of the largest forts in India. The Chittorgarh Fort, plainly known as Chittor is spread majestically over high Cliffs of 590 feet in height and is spread across 692 acres of land is a fine example of the popular Rajputarchitecture. The imposing structure of the fort has many gateways built by the later rulers of the Maurya clan. Chittorgarh Fort was previously the capital of Mewar.The Great MaharanaPratap, ,son of RanaUdai Singh II, is Regarded as a person values Rajputs cherish and die for.
AlauddinKhilji attacked the fort in 1303AD in order to capture Rani Padmini who was very beautiful. She was the wife of RanaRatan Singh. Though Rana showed her to AlauddinKhilji in the mirrors but he still wanted to capture her. Rana was captured by the Khilji who gave a proposal that Rana will be released if rani comes to his harem. Rather than going to the harem, rani sent 700 soldiers who rescued the rana but were defeated in the battle that as fought near the fort. Rana was killed in that battle and Rani Padmini along with other women performed jauhar (self-immolation). Alauddin won the battle and appointed his son Khizr Khan as its ruler.
Owing to its magnificent edifice, the Chittorgarh Fort was declared a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in the year 2013.
