Bryce Canyon

04/10/2017

Leaving Page we drove over the Glen Canyon Dam Wall. A short distance up the road is a little known trail which leads to spectacular views over Lake Powell. we went up there to take a very brief look at the spectacular golden canyons partially submerged under the blue waters of Lake Powell.

The road to the small town of Kanab leads past Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Kanab itself has been the setting for many western movies. From Kanab we travel along a picturesque Utah back road, through some tiny towns, before arriving at Bryce Canyon.

Bryce Canyon is not a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheaters or bowls, carved into the edge of a high plateau. The most famous of these is the Bryce Amphitheater  which is filled with irregularly eroded spires of rocks called hoodoos. Perhaps every visitor to the park will spend at least some time marveling at its four main viewpoints, all found within the first few miles of the park: Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunset Point, and Sunrise Point. Many who have seen both Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon tells  that Bryce is far more spectacular. Bryce is not really a canyon, but a large amphitheater carved out of a variety of rock types. We were taken to the three main overlooks, and  had free time to walk around and explore these.
