Toronto, on Lake Ontario, is the hub of the nation’s commercial, financial, industrial, and cultural life, and is the capital of the Province of Ontario. In 1793 when British colonial officials founded the ‘Town of York’ on what then was the Upper Canadian frontier. That backwoods village grew to become the ‘City of Toronto’ in 1834.
Toronto suffered badly in the depression of the 1930s. However, prosperity returned with the Second World War. The population of Toronto continued to boom. The first subway line in Toronto opened in 1954. Toronto City Hall opened in 1965. Ontario Science Museum opened in 1969. CN Tower was built in 1975. The Rogers Centre opened in 1989. In 1998 several municipalities were merged to form a single city sometimes known as the megacity. Today Toronto is a flourishing city, a major financial and business centre.
CN Tower – Toronto
CN Tower was technically the world’s tallest building from its completion in 1976 until 2009 standing at a height of 553 meter.
Approximately two million visitors annually head to the tower. There is a splendid view of the city from the top of the tower. However, the CN Tower was actually built for more practical reasons as well. A Canadian construction boom in the 1960s transformed the downtown area into a region of skyscrapers, causing a major telecommunications problem throughout the city of Toronto. With its microwave receptors located at 338m and 553m the CN Tower quickly solved the communication problems for the city, which had become a major concern for both businesses and residents. There is a splendid view of the city from the top of the tower.
