Located in a valley, EDZNA the Itzas began as a simple settlement in the middle pre-classic period in 700 to 300 BC. They abandoned this settlement by 1500 AD, cause leading to their decline and gradual abandonment remain a mystery. The site is a mixture of architectural styles spanning over 1500 years from 300 BC to 1200 AD, some structures are Peten style 300 BC to 200AD, some Puuc style around 6th century and so on. Edzna was an influential political and economic regional capital. Edzna’s massive complexes that once covered more than 17 sq.km, were built by a highly stratified society that flourished from about 600 BC to the 15th century AD. During that period the people of Edzna built more than 20 complexes, an architectural styles, installing an ingenious network of water-collection and irrigation systems.
Most of the visible carvings were dated from AD 550 to 810. Edzna means ‘House of the Itzas’ a reference to a predominant governing Mayan origin. Edzna’s rulers recorded significant events on stone Pillars. Around 30 such have been discovered adorning the site’s principal temples.
